How Many Days Do You Need in Austria? Itineraries from 5 to 14
How long should you spend in Austria? The honest answer is: as long as you can, because Austria rewards depth more than breadth. But that answer is not useful when you are sitting in front of a flight booking, so this guide gives you the realistic math.
We have built Austria trips for travelers ranging from long weekenders to two-week Alpine explorers. The patterns below are what actually works on the ground, not what looks tidy on a map.
The short answer
- 5 days: Vienna only, or Salzburg plus Salzkammergut lakes.
- 7 days: Vienna plus Salzburg (the classic first-timer combo).
- 10 days: Vienna plus Salzburg plus Salzkammergut, or add Innsbruck.
- 14 days: The grand tour: Vienna, Wachau Valley, Salzburg, Salzkammergut, Innsbruck, and Tyrol.
The full breakdown of each is below, with the realistic pace, the travel time math, and the things to skip.
The pace math nobody explains
Before any itinerary, two numbers to internalize.
Travel days eat hours, not days. A morning Railjet from Vienna to Salzburg takes 2h22m. Add the trip to the station (30 minutes from a central Vienna hotel), the recommended 30-minute buffer, the train, the transfer to your Salzburg hotel (typically 15-20 minutes), and you have used a full 4 to 5 hour block. That eats the morning and lunch. You arrive with the afternoon free at best.
Jet lag eats the first day. Almost no traveler from North America operates at full capacity on the first day in Austria. Plan a light arrival day: walk a neighborhood, eat early, sleep. Putting a hard logistical task on day one almost always backfires.
The implication: a "10 day trip" is really 8 to 9 active days once you subtract the arrival haze and the inter-region transit. Plan for that.
5 days in Austria
Recommendation: Vienna only, or Salzburg plus Salzkammergut.
Five days is not enough time to combine three regions without making the trip feel rushed.
Vienna only (5 days)
A focused Vienna trip works very well in 5 days. Suggested rhythm:
- Day 1 (arrival): Walk the Innere Stadt (1st district), eat early at a heuriger or a coffee house, sleep. No museums.
- Day 2: Schönbrunn Palace in the morning (pre-booked), lunch nearby, Belvedere Palace in the afternoon (Klimt's "The Kiss").
- Day 3: Kunsthistorisches Museum in the morning, Hofburg Palace complex in the afternoon, evening at a Musikverein or State Opera concert.
- Day 4: Wachau Valley day trip (train to Krems, boat back or continue by rental car), tastings and dinner in the valley.
- Day 5: Coffee house morning at Café Central or Landtmann, MuseumsQuartier, Naschmarkt for lunch, late afternoon flight or final dinner in the Marais equivalent (Neubau).
Salzburg plus Salzkammergut (5 days)
If you want the more scenic version, base in Salzburg.
- Day 1 (arrival): Fly into Munich or Vienna, train to Salzburg. Walk the old town, dinner at a beer garden.
- Day 2: Salzburg deep dive: Hohensalzburg Fortress, Getreidegasse, Mozart's birthplace, Mirabell Gardens.
- Day 3: Day trip to Hallstatt (arrive by 9am to beat crowds, leave by 3pm).
- Day 4: Wolfgangsee day: St. Wolfgang village, Schafberg cog railway, lake boat.
- Day 5: Bad Ischl imperial spa morning, return to airport (Munich or Vienna) for departure.
7 days in Austria
Recommendation: Vienna (4 nights) plus Salzburg (3 nights).
A week is the first length where adding a region pays off. The classic combination:
Vienna plus Salzburg (7 days)
- Days 1-4: Vienna (imperial palaces, museums, coffee houses, one concert, Schönbrunn + Belvedere day, Wachau day trip on day 4 or hotel departure).
- Day 5: Morning Railjet from Vienna Hauptbahnhof to Salzburg (2h22m). Arrive by lunch. Afternoon walking the old town.
- Day 6: Full day in Salzburg: Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart's birthplace, Sound of Music locations at Mirabell.
- Day 7: Half day Sound of Music tour or Untersberg mountain, afternoon Railjet back to Vienna (or fly out of Salzburg).
Alternative: Salzburg plus Salzkammergut plus Innsbruck (7 days)
For travelers who have done Vienna before, or who want mountains not cities.
- Days 1-2: Salzburg (2 nights)
- Days 3-4: Salzkammergut, based in Hallstatt or Bad Ischl (2 nights)
- Days 5-7: Innsbruck and Tyrol (3 nights, including one day on the Nordkette gondola)
10 days in Austria
Recommendation: Vienna (4) + Salzburg (2) + Salzkammergut (2) + Innsbruck (2).
Ten days is the sweet spot for most first time Austria travelers. Allows four regions without becoming a packing-and-unpacking trip.
The classic 10 day Austria trip
- Days 1-4 (Vienna): Standard 4-day Vienna rhythm with Schönbrunn + Belvedere + Kunsthistorisches Museum + one concert + Wachau day trip.
- Day 5: Morning Railjet Vienna to Salzburg (2h22m). Afternoon walking the old town.
- Day 6: Full day in Salzburg (Fortress, Mozart, Mirabell, Untersberg or Sound of Music tour).
- Day 7: Drive to Salzkammergut (Hallstatt or Bad Ischl). Full day exploring lakes.
- Day 8: Continue Salzkammergut day (Wolfgangsee, Schafberg railway) or drive south through the Tauern.
- Day 9: Continue to Innsbruck (2h30m drive from Bad Ischl, or Railjet from Salzburg in 1h50m).
- Day 10: Innsbruck full day (Nordkette gondola, Hofburg, Golden Roof), evening flight from Innsbruck (or return to Vienna by Railjet in 4h15m).
14 days in Austria
Recommendation: Grand tour — Vienna + Wachau + Salzburg + Salzkammergut + Innsbruck + Tyrol.
Two weeks is where you can capture the full west-to-east arc of Austria without skipping a region you would later regret.
The classic 14 day Austria trip
- Days 1-5 (Vienna): 5 days in Vienna, with day trip to Bratislava on day 5.
- Days 6-7 (Wachau Valley): 2 nights based in Krems or Dürnstein, wine tastings and Melk Abbey.
- Days 8-9 (Salzburg): 2 nights in the Baroque city.
- Days 10-11 (Salzkammergut): 2 nights, based in Hallstatt or Bad Ischl.
- Days 12-14 (Tyrol): 3 nights in Innsbruck or a Tyrolean village, with day trip to Kitzbühel or Sölden.
- Day 14 evening: Fly home from Innsbruck, Munich (1h45m by train), or return Railjet to Vienna (4h15m).
Alternative: The Alps focus (14 days)
For travelers who want the mountains as the trip, not the cities.
- Days 1-2: Salzburg (arrival + city).
- Days 3-4: Salzkammergut (lakes and Hallstatt).
- Days 5-8: Zell am See or Kitzbühel base (4 nights of Alpine day trips: Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Krimml Waterfalls, Kaprun).
- Days 9-11: Innsbruck (3 nights).
- Days 12-14: St. Anton am Arlberg or Vorarlberg (3 nights, western Alps).
The travel days problem
A practical detail that catches first time Austria travelers: between regions, you lose a half day to a full day each time. Here is the math:
- Vienna to Salzburg: half day (2h22m Railjet plus transfers).
- Salzburg to Hallstatt: half day (1h15m drive plus arrival).
- Salzburg to Innsbruck: half day (1h50m Railjet).
- Vienna to Innsbruck: three quarters of a day (4h15m Railjet).
- Hallstatt to Innsbruck: half to three quarters of a day (car via Salzburg 3h, or train 4h30m with changes).
- Innsbruck to Vorarlberg: half day (Railjet 2h30m to Bregenz).
In a 10 day trip with three inter-region moves, you lose roughly 1.5 days. Build that in.
